Music

Song lifts our up our hearts, filling us with joy and honouring the God who created us to sing. At Christ Church, music weaves through all of our worship. We love traditional hymns and old gospel tunes, and we try to keep our selections familiar and singable. We also sing many of our prayers. Our 10:30 service is accompanied by the organ.

Choir

All parishioners are welcome to join the choir, providing musical leadership to the rest of the congregation. Choir members attend a weekly rehearsal, except in the summer.

Choral Scholars

This group of enthusiastic teens and young adults are members of the choir, who also have a separate rehearsal (immediately afterward) to rehearse other pieces of service music and develop their vocal skills. They are paid a small honorarium each semester to show our appreciation for their gifts and respect for their hard work.

The Choral Scholars Program was launched in Fall 2022 to meet a need in the community. Although Shelburne has a vibrant music scene, especially in the summers, there were (before our program began), no opportunities for formal musical education in Shelburne, including in the local high school. We decided to contribute to meeting this need, in a way that would also strengthen our choir and community.

Local individuals and business are welcome to contact us about sponsoring a student for this program, which we want to be able to offer to as many local young people as possible.

Organ Scholar

Mei Jennings came to Christ Church in October 2022 as the parish's first organ scholar, shortly after moving to Shelburne from Sackville, Nova Scotia. Mei loves music, and had been studying piano for seven years before starting at Christ Church. She's excited to be part of the community! As organ scholar, Mei plays at the 10:30 service three times a month, attends the choir rehearsals, and receives lessons on transferring her piano skills to the organ and parish music leadership.

On the third Sunday of the month, long-time parishioner Robert MacKay plays the organ in a country-gospel style.
